This side cap intrigues me. Its obviously genuine period yet surely the stores and factories that made and issued them would have had a variety of regulation sizes ?. Also look at the professional workmanship involved, to deconstruct and then reconstruct in such a way and to match the stitching, takes a great deal of skill, which tends to suggest that this was done in factory at the time of manufacture, why i cant imagine but it certainly adds to the history and provenance, a good looking cap and i would be very happy to have one in my collection.

I've encountered this type of factory rework over the years - not often but regularly. I can imagine it occured when the issue depot had overstocks of smaller caps and a shortage of larger size. 57 is an average size and more common than 54. The depot returned the smaller ones to the factory to be reworked.

It would have been less expensive and used less material than making up a shortage by producing new caps.
