Hi Bigfoot,
The top panel is in fact one piece of twill, sewn in a crimp with the lining to give a small measure if rigidity...
Nice cap! I'd like to see more detailed images of the insignia area, please?
Mark.

Congratulation
Definitely a Schlesische Mutzenfabrik manufactured cap, commonly referred to as a Frankenstein which is the location of the manufacturer.
Nice Cap.

Back to earlier comment I have also heard the red lining was to show they were friendly to luftwaffe but this could be just heresay and oh yeah it's a beauty I love the style of it well done Ade
The red lining was actually a result of tests carried out in mid 1940 by the Tropical Institute at the University of Hamburg who deduced through various tests that the colour red was the best lining colour to deflect the UV rays passing through the cap's outer shell, while also allowing the transfer of body heat through the top of the head.
The Germans were well aware of UV danger, even to the point of differing UV tolerances on the Zeiss/Umbral goggle lense types.

Detail of the insignia area follows as you asked, Mark.

Hi Jim, nice one and welcome to the forum.
Have you figured out how to post an album yet?> If not, I will talk you through it.
Cheers, Ade.
