Default Differences between M34, M38 and M40 Schiffchen Side Caps

    Hello all,

I've been confused by the terminology of Heer side caps (Schiffchen) for a long time - I can't seem to get the difference between the M34 and M38 side caps. Was one model specifically for officers or enlisted men? Also, was the M40 style Schiffchen (straight "ear flaps") only for the SS and Luftwaffe? When did the soutache stop being applied?

    Thank you for your help!

    Hello,
I'll be talking about Heer headgear only.

The M34 Feldmütze is for EMs/NCOs, it has false flaps, buttons, a soutache and a Reich cockade.

The M34 (aka alter Art) for Officer has a bill, a soft crown and BeVo woven insignia

The M34/35 Feldmütze is a M34 for EM/NCO modified in 1935, it is the one that opened this thread (here Infanterie soutached)

M38 is a M34/35 for Officer with piping, two pieces insignia and a soutache

In 1940, insignia colour changed from dark green to Feldgrau
The soutache was discontinued in 1942
Then you have the M42 Feldmütze and M43 called Einheitsfeldmütze
    That's all...
    Thanks

As it was not mentioned in the question, i did not speak about the Bergmütze, i'm sure you know it.
below you can see several M34 feldmützen (production from 1934 to 1935)

    Hello,
    You're welcome...
It is not a mystery anymore
By the way, Feldmütze 34/35 is collector vocable, my own one in fact. 34 for the pattern, 35 for the modification.
Usually people say Feldmütze 34 or Feldmütze 34 of early production (for the one produced in 1934 and 1935).
    Thanks
