A contract cap is an issue cap (in other words, the cap given to the soldier by the Army) while a private purchase cap (usually higher quality) is one which the soldier chooses to buy for himself out of his own money from a military tailor.

Happy new year everyone. I have one question if anyone knows. I attach 2 photos the first one was entitled Luftwaffe artillery cap and the second Luftwaffe signal cap. They both have orange piping though. The first one's is more bright as it's almost mint.
Is this the same thing? Who is called a signal man? The one holding those signs helping the plane to park?

On my computer, the first looks Red for artillery and the second looks orange/brown for air signals, ie radio operators, though ground based telephone operators would wear the same colour.
You may need to get your eyes tested or invest in a new monitor!

LOL my eyes are like an eagle's, i assure you. It's just that i thought that the red is more vivid and bright coz the cap it's in unissued mint condition, whilst the other is worn/faded.
Also keep in mind that we don't all have the knowledge to know about departments and colors. That's why we ask for help in the forum coz some of us are longer in the hobby and know more stuff and some not.
Thanks for the info anyway

Yes, the Red is for Flak, the "orange" is actually an orange-brown and is for Signals.
