I gather this would have been made of brass? Did they ever make the gold coloured ones out of aluminium?

Hi Tom, I don't know about alloy, but I imagine they came in washed zinc by 44/45.

Bear in mind that gilt finshed insignia for Generals caps were not authorised until 1943. Prior to that, they wore silver coloured insignia like the rest of the Heer, just gilt chincords singled them out.
