    Hello,

Nice looking M34, it is too bad that the reapplication of insignia is not very good!

    Thanks Chris and Tony.
Fred are you inferring that these were applied post war?
Or field done sloppy? That I would agree with.

    Hello Eric,

You can never tell when a piece of insignia was applied or reapplied. The most you can tell is if the sewing technique is what was used during the time period. Being that the eagle is a pre 1940 cap eagle and the cocade is a post 1940 cap cocade and that both are hand sewn ,I believe that they have been reapplied. The general standard during the time period would have been machine sewn during manufacture. If not machine sewn they would have been applied in a more professional manner.
In my personal opinion they were replaced post war by somebody that didn't sew well.

Well how strange as this was a local buy from an estate.
I bow to your knowledge then.

    Hello Eric,

I am just another slob on this collecting bus. As I said earlier " You can never tell when a piece of insignia was applied or reapplied."That is just my opinion from looking at the piece.

Here is one that Pete has that is applied like it.........Google Image Result for http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Heer/photos/H004267thumb.jpg................

Not all of them are factory done IMO. And not my first time to see a field applied in such fashion.

    Hello Eric,

Like I said, It is only my opinion! I understand that not all of them were machine sewn. The hat you originally posted has an insignia/ sewing combination that I would not believe came out of a factory. I don't care for the sewing job on the M42 cap on the link you posted. While it is alot more uniform and professional looking, by this period in the war, I would tend to believe that they were machine sewing most of the insignia on to headgear. I have only owned one M42 hat and it had a machine sewn eagle in the "T" configuration as shown. As I have stated before ,"this is just my opinion"

    Fred
