Can you explain the lion on the cap? Looks a lot like a Dutch cap (kepie) lion

Aha! You are a genius. The cap came with the lion on it many, many years ago and I left it there. Maybe it was seized by a Dutch resistance fighter!

I am not being cynical at all. I have owned this cap since the 1970s and it is otherwise among the best of its kind I have ever owned. I now assume from what you suggest that it was redecorated at some point, but not by me. And not by a general staff officer in the German army of the time.

I had always thought it some German heraldic device with some divisional association. The Assmann catalog is filled with such eagles, lions, and other heraldic things.

However, you showed me its origins, which do not square with such use in the epoch 1933-1945 in my view.

US soldiers re decorated and or stripped caps they found in 1945. It is hardly a unique practice.

As a far fetched theory, the dutch badge looks somewhat like a Bavarian heraldic lion, and since the cap was made in Munich, and, I think, made to order....maybe the Dutch badge appealed to the man's Bavarian sense of Heimat and he was an occupier of Holland with a Dutch girl friend.

That's a theory. In any case, I removed the badge. I had always wondered about it since I got it decades ago.
