Help with cap and is this a flag?

More detailed pics. I found all of this stuff together I thought it was all parts of the belt or at least from the same soldier. The belt ammo clips y strap and gas can. Looking at it I dont believe it was repainted looks original to me inside the mask was a number 11716 and that is why I think it has 1171 painted on it and what would the 88 be for on can I thought maby a division. We are in danger here of taking about the can more than the cap, which might be confusing for some members who have not seen your other thread about this item. So here is a link:

The number "1171" painted onto the gas mask will the soldiers roll number as found on his dog tag. Usually the same number would be painted onto the can. So the "88" would not make it from the same man. Divisional numbers were not painted on cans.

There is however, a paper lable on the inside of the can which does have his name plus a unit designation on it for Artillery Regt 9.

Yes, I believe it is an outright fake. The incorrect cut plus the overall workmanship is not up to standard and I think the eagle is fake too.

Agreed that the cap is bad. The interior plus the bad workmanship clearly give it away. The insignia is some very well known poor fakes. The flag is also bad. Sorry.
