That is really fantastic mate, I don't think it gets much better than an item with that kind of traceable history. Great cap, terrific photos and a brilliant story make it a very interesting piece for sure! Well done.

Great piece of history and provenance, but i have to ask, what would make the cockade move so far off centre, in all the period photos it is perfectly centred, yet on the posted ones it has shifted to the right of the cap but appears to be quite firm against the material

There is a simple answer to your question. When the cap came from the family the cockade for some reason had been removed. The cap was also a bit squashed if you get my meaning. So when the cockade went back on (and there are no other holes in the pasteboard) through the original holes it sits flush but the cap band is squish wiff somewhat hence it looks off centre in the pics.

As the cap moves back into shape that should centre...in theory at least.
