    Default Late war (?) ErEl

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

presently there is an - authentic IMHO - ErEl cap on ebay.de which seems quite unusual to me:

Although the interior does not look like one of the late war ones, the piping of the cap is not the usual Abzeichentuch but a prefabricated celleon (?) piping that has to be joined by overlapping. What do the specialists think? Never seen anything like this before from ErEl, ohter makers yes, but ErEl?

ErWeSa--I would say the piping is rayon, not celleon.
I have yet to see rayon piping butted together (like wool)--it is always overlapped.

That being said, this is the first Erel that I can recall seeing that had rayon piping instead of wool (even the 1945 Erels used wool for the piping).

Thank you stonement, of course you are right with the rayon.

These pipings cannot be joined by being sewn together as they are one woven piece like a Litze (as can be seen here: https://www.warrelics.eu/forum/attac...r-img_1040.jpg, the white Vorstoß comes very close the one in the ErEl cap). As you say, very unusual, particularly as there is no hint for a late war cap where for reasons of shortages in materials other makers used this prefabricated pipings, and, as you say - I didn't know ErEl ever did either until I saw this cap.

So F.-B. again is right, all those who believe in "texbook"-examples only without considering what shortages during the war made possible/necessary miss a lot of very interesting original specimen.

    Excellent discussion, gentlemen. Thank you.

I just won this one on ebay... and also just noticed the piping so that brought me to this place.
It looks genuine but I think this is pretty strange for an erel cap... Hope I dindn't pick the wrong one

    Hi vonbrugge,

stonemint thinks it is authentic (and so do I), so don't worry, you've obviously got a very special ErEl. I would be interested in pictures of the spots where the pipings of the centerband join and some "under the hood" ones, would be grateful if you could post some.

Congrats on the cap, very interesting piece!
