never seen an eagle like that... could it be that the legs have been bent?
Here is a link to the Blog that Nick posted earlier which shows some more pics and where I commented:

I have not seen this pattern of eagle before either. It being bent is possible.
The cap itself is an Officers quality example, but with Other Ranks pattern insignia. This combination might be correct for someone of his rank/postition.
Cheers, Ade.
Additional pictures.
It is hard to tell, it is possible. Thanks
Would you be able to give me any information about this hat ? Year, rank ,etc.?
The owner was graded as a Senior NCO in a technical capacity. Date is late 1930's to the end of WW2.
Cheers, Ade.
From the close up , it certainly looks as if the leg is bent but there are no cracks or stress marks on the leg itself, you would expect to see something as the pressure needed to bend a small and fragile piece of metal such as this must have been very gradual otherwise it would have snapped and i cant see any evidence of pressure in the weave of the material and by the look of the cap overall doesnt look as if its been stored badly,STRANGE!!!!
Could we get some pictures under the sweatband, and a complete view of the interior?
