Markings on SS Schirmmütze Chin Strap

I recall that the following type of marking was met with mixed opinions. Has anyone found any further information that would further support or dismiss this as an original period marking?

I've encountered this marking on a few chinstraps that were undoubtedly original...

Looks it would be affixed to a black cap but I guess it really doesn't matter I think it could go on either

I was just assuming a black strap could be worn on both

The ones I have seen were on early to mid period black caps...

I was just speculated is there a difference in the type of strap for the hat
