The main reason the beret and crash liner was discontinued was the introduction of radio headsets to all tank crew members. These would simply not fit over the liner/beret. By the invasion of France in May 1940 you will see photos of tank crews in their vehicle wearing Feldgrau M34 pattern feldmutzes. This was due to supplies of the new black feldmutze not being recieved in time, so grey was worn as a stop gap measure.
The beret was soon relagated to training use only. The latest date I have seen in a beret was 1941. I have seen photos of the 9th SS Pz Regt in training wearing berets in 1943.
Cheers, Ade.
Nice berets every one. I wish one day to be a proud owner of one too.
Looking for the photo albums of Leutnant Emil Freitag, 3. / G.R. 377

She was a wonderful actress. In her time, she could have bought a Pz beret for a fraction of the price I paid for same. In real life, the things are not as poetic as they seem in pictures, truth be told. It was a stage, and I traded them all to a high rolling dealer who gypped me, actually. You know how that goes.
I still have my beret....:
