    Hi Gents,

the cap that started the thread is a nice original one. When it came out of the woodwork it just had the eagle on it, the TK was missing. The original eagle was removed and a matching set was placed to the cap.
The cap wasnt found with an "SS Officers jacket" but with an ultra rare SS VT jacket without insignia.
The price for both was a steal...

Here is a pic of the eagle that original came with the cap. The jacket was next to mint, with correct markings and liner....

    Bests Olle
and where it was found?? i ask becose the cap is so salty and the tunic mint

Sometimes the riddles and enigmas with this material defy any decoding.

The cap is authentic, that is all that matters in my opinion. The fact that it has fiddled-with badges is often the case with SS headgear.

If the cap is woolen, and the field blouse is cotton, such might account for the divergence.

In any case, member Big Daddy posted a similar cap to the one in the UK.

The latter has also been purchased by an advanced collector.

Sometimes luck smiles on the collector, especially in a world made smaller by the power of the internet.

As ever, the key is to have direct access to real material and the chance to examine it closely for a long period of time so recognition becomes a kind of reflex. Many or even most collectors who seek SS material (especially younger people) never get this chance, which is quite sad, since so much of the real material is concentrated in a few hands. Somewhere there should be a public study collection for young and new collectors, but I do not think such a thing exists. The closest entity, of course, are these websites, but they are a tricky business, really.

Shea has a not dissimilar cap on his website, as does Stezelberger. But their caps are for sale at multiples of the price that our UK colleague sold this cap.

The cap pictured below came from Pennsylvania, USA.

The cap with the cloth peak is the non plus ultra, of course. Congratulations. All you need are some badges, just like all the rest of us.

    Hi all,

    some nice caps posted

As for the condition of the cap that started the thread. In Germany its often the case that you find these things at different places in one house. It may be that the hat was lieng on the attic in a corner were it was hidden or forgotten and the jacket hang in a wardrobe somewere else in the house.

Thanks for this important observation about Dachbodenfunde and the like.
