Abgesehen vom Zweiten Weltkrieg und der Nachkriegszeit, als auch zahlreiche Geheimagenten der Alliierten die Kanalisation der geteilten Stadt für sich zu nutzen wussten (woraufhin auch der berühmte Film Der dritte Mann entstand), ist die Kanalisation als Notunterkunft heute weitgehend unbedeutend.
