I'm sure I read somewhere that AI was not an authentic sqn code in BoB so as not to offend / discriminate against any of the actual units participating. Anyone know if this is correct?
You're quite right - the producers were concerned that use of actual Squadron codes would lead to endless ' Why wasn't my old Squadron shown in the film?' criticism, so they opted for fictitious codes. So the film Spitfires used AI, BO, CD, EI, EQ & LC codes.
The full story can be found in Robert Rudhall's classic book, ' Battle Of Britain - The Movie' (Ramrod, 2000 ).
