Israel Defense Forces - Combat Medals, 5733-1973
For more than 20 years there was opposition from the IDF to the awarding of medals. At the head of the opposition stood David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, who was content to distribute 12 badges "Hero of Israel" following the War of Independence, and to empower the Chief of Staff and IDF commanders to award "Merit Badges". The Knesset adopted the "Law of Awards" in 1970. The details regarding awards were set forth in 1973 and the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation issued the medals.

Police Medals, 5734-1974

The Jewish policemen in the sea coast region stayed on duty but there was a shortage of commanders and technicians who could take the place of the British. However, within two years, available manpower was doubled and the needed equipment was ordered. In 1969, when police headquarters were transferred to Jerusalem, the police force had 11,134 men and women, including 1,050 Druse and Arabs. Four classes of medals are awarded by the Israeli Police.
