Max Wunsche served in my favourite Division!


In June Sturmbannführer Max Wünsche was ordered to transfer to a new division forming in France , which later became the 12th SS Panzer Division and take command of the 12th SS Panzer Regiment.

On 6 June 1944, the Allies landed in Normandy and the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend was committed to action on the 7 June.In the following battles Wünsche's Regiment was credited with the destruction of 219 tanks up to the beginning of July, which gained Wünsche the award of the Oakleaves to his Knight's Cross.

The 12th SS Panzer was later trapped in what became known as the Falaise Pocket. On the night of 20 August, Wünsche, his adjutant SS-Hauptsturmführer Isecke, SS-Untersturmführer Fritz
Freitag and a wounded medical officer, escaped out of the pocket on foot. During the escape Wünsche was wounded in the calf and the Doctor captured. On the 24 August, Isecke was captured followed a short time later by the capture of Wünsche and Frietag.

Wünsche spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of in camp 165 at Caithness which was a special camp for high ranking German officers.

Walkwolf......ive not always been an Imperial buff, in my teens when i collected Third Reich items, I much admired Peiper and his exploits, I even drove to La Gleize to see his King Tiger, and try to follow his footsteps.....I can remember hearing about his death, and being very angry about the circumstances (he was murdered in 76').... so I remember the admiration I had for this particular member of the Leibstandarte.

Yes, I am familliar with Jochen and his being murdered.
It was quite a risk for him, really, to be living in that region.

I have a book simply entitled 'Peiper', and I must have had
a brain fart, ID'ing him as Meyer........... ! ? !
