Congrats on a super haul !!
Nick
Thanks Nick! The cross turned out to be a 44mm after all. The ribbon ring was described like its older brother but it turns out to be a unique fashioned one. I guess I could convince myself that this was a late field improvised Knight's Cross substitute the ribbon she described is very long but to the KVK with swords. Still very happy with all of it! I was hoping the EK was an ubergross one with a custom ring.

Great find! Can we see some photos of the Italian flag? It looks nice! With all the other good stuff in those boxes, it looks like you might be Needing those 10 Rotties to guard it!
Give me a few. My better half is on the move so I will have to fall in guys. I will measure and take close up shots of it. Seems to be made out of a heavy twine like material.

Very cool pick up, a real time capsule. A shame about the visor but that can be fixed if you so desire. The close combat clasp is also a really good thing to get. Do you know any more details about where he served and with whom other than just the 5th army?
Jerry,
I have a lot of papers to go through to see. She told me the family threw out his uniform because it was moth damaged but they retained his medals. I asked about patches and none still existed. The 5th army info was one the release papers to ship some of this home.

Nice! I'd get the visor restored. And the Italian flag is superb.
