Comrade A.A. Kirichko served in the Soviet Army from June 22, 1941 till July 1, 1945. Participated in the Great Patriotic War from March 1942 till May 18, 1942. On May 18, 1942 he was severely wounded in the battles against Germans as part of a naval brigade unit and was captured by the enemy while unconscious. Was held in the captivity from May 18, 1942 till April 9, 1945. Was liberated by American troops. Underwent special interviews from April 9, 1945 till July 1, 1945. Afterwards was discharged from the military. His wound is confirmed by the Medical Committee of the Zlatoust City Military Draft and Registration Office as of January 23, 1957. There are no other documents to confirm his wound. He is currently in disabled worker status, 3rd degree because of his illness.

Has no disablement as the result of the wound.

Has been working as an under-the-crane worker at the #1 rolling shop of the Zlatoust steel plant since October 23, 1945.

Is characterized positively at his workplace.

Conclusion: Deserves to be awarded the ‘For Bravery’ Medal for having been wounded while participating in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
Due to the controversial nature of his service, this award did not come until 1957, after Stalin's death.

It seems he was also a sloppy eater.

Hi Ed, re Private Anton Alekseevich Kirichko. I guess being captured was bad enough, but being liberated by American forces and having had contact with the West his "crime" was further compounded. No wonder he was "interviewed" for so long...

    Yet another interesting group. Thanks!

    Cheers, Ade.

As a change of pace, a few singles.

Red Army Man Lipa Moiseyevich (Leonid Mikhajlovich) Rozenfel’d, Sub-machine Gunner, 35th Tank Regiment

Order of the Red Banner, type 3 - 75934

Red Army Man Rosenfeld, was a member of a sub-machine gunners tank desant group that participated in the attack against the enemy in the region of Kiselev, South-West of Gostitschevo (Steppe Front, in the direction of Belgorod). On the front side of the German defense line, our attacking tanks were forced to move in a column, one behind another. The enemy, taking advantage of this fact, set up ambushes on both sides of the road and inflicted serious losses on the tank desant troops with hurricanes of machine gun fire.

Comrade Rosenfeld together with two friends jumped off a tank and engaged a fight against a group of enemy machine gunners. The courageous soldier killed seven Germans, while the rest of them retreated.

Comrade Rosenfeld advanced and joined the group of soldiers with the Commander at the head of the column.

On the new frontline he shot 10 fascists, destroyed with grenades three dug-outs, a 75mm weapon and a tractor.

He deserves the governmental award Order of the Red Banner.

This is the Soviet medal that got me hooked:

First Sergeant of the Guards Alexandra Vasilyevna Grebenschchikova [female], Sanitary Instructor of motor rifle company, 1st Motor Rifle Battalion, 29th Guards Order of Bogdan Khemelnitsky 1st Degree Motor Rifle Brigade of Unech, The Guards Tank Ural-Lvov Voluntary Corps

    Order of Glory, 3rd class, type 2, var. 2 - 805395

When fighting against German invaders Guards First Sergeant Grebenschchikova was among the first to cross in the forging of the River Oder [ca. 22 Jan 1945] and under strong machine-gun and artillery fire rendered medical assistance to 75 wounded. She took 63 heavily wounded persons with their personal weapons away from the battlefield.

The Guards First Sergeant Grebenschchikova deserves a government award, Order of the Red Banner.
While this award was down-graded to an Order of Glory, it was approved 20 March 1945. The medal, however, was not physically awarded until 28 March 1990. The 23 year old nurse finally got the award for her deeds when she was 70.
