    Default theft /security worries

    Hi everyone

    amazing collections

Is anyone else worried about security, my collection is starting to grow with some expensive items and even if your covered by home insurance lets face it all our items are one off items generally, unique in their own right.

I'm looking at getting a display cabinet but most don't even come with locks does anyone have any good ideas in regards secure display cabinets ?

Maybe its just me but always in the back of my mind I am worried about loosing stuff to burglars.

Your question is a good one, and opens the debate regarding the balance of displaying an item, and protecting your investment. Personally, I keep my more valuable items in places that are very secure, i.e. bank vaults. Unfortunately, this means that they are not on display, and begs the question "why collect it if you don't show it?". With documents and paperwork, this is fine, as high quality scans can still display well, although scanning a nice DD SS lid is something quite different. In these modern times where it seems that more and more people choose to steal rather than do a decent day's work, protecting what is valuable becomes a necessity. Even if that sadly means items are not shown as often as one would like.

If you have the budget, very secure display features can be designed. I'd start by securing the room (if they can't get into the room, then they can't get into the cabinets).

Couple of nice big shepherds helps too...

    Regards,

    Carl

Your best alarm system is the nosiest neighbor you can find! Ask them to call the police if they see ANYONE around your place. I let my neighbors know that I have a shotgun, rifles, and handguns and will use them if I hear a bump in the night. They, in turn, let their teen kids know not to burgle my house becuase they will be shot! LOL Nobody around me knows I have a militaria collection, I'm quite private about my affairs.

I think its going to have to be as you say a secure display case luckily there is a specialist glass manufacturer not to far from me so may pop in there this week, in regards securing the room that's all done, I also have a German Shepherd however having attended and investigated many burglaries dogs can be pretty useless and I have personally seen multiples of ten dogs in a drunken stupor after being fed drugs wrapped in meat by burglars. I know in reality there is not a lot you can do and if someone wants to get in they will. However most burglars are in and out in minutes so its a case of limiting the smash and grab option.

    Thanks for your replies
