Default Soviet flag captured in 1941

    Gentlemen,

These photos are from a flag that was supposedly captured by finnish troops in the area of Karelia in 1941.

It would be nice if the experts could let us know what they think about it.

If it is indeed a real wartime flag, it would be (at least for me) the best source of closeup photos of a flag of this type that I have ever seen.

    Hi gus,
The story could be true about where it came from, But it is a very clean flag for a battle flag. There are on dirt or smoke marks on it,
The fabric looks oldish, and could have come from that era,
Again it could be cold war era, they had the same flags.
I may be wrong but it is to clean for me. No one cleans a battle flag. Here is mine as an example.
    Dave.

    Dave,

    Thanks for your reply.

You have a point there. I suppose you are right if it is really a battle flag.

If it was taken from an official building, then it can very well be clean. I have a german flag that was taken by an american soldier from an administrative building in Naples after the capture of the city. The flag is quite clean, except for the signature of the G.I. I also have a Hinomaru Yosegaki japanese flag with only slight stain marks. I would not be surprised if the owners had washed any of the flags at some point.

In any case, it is a quite interesting observation regarding this flag.

P.S. Your japanese battle flag is awesome. If it could only talk...

    Regards,

    Gus

That is the building flag, and sometime they was used on the field, but, I would not comment about the trophee- could it or could'nt. Any story can be sold together.
What I'am planning to bid is a winter hat

Hi Gus, one of the members of our LH group has a identical flag to the one you show just in a bit better condition.

    Cheers, Ade.

    dIMAS,

You are quite right. In militaria, you always buy the item, not the story (unless it is documented).

    Ade,

Thanks for the reply. I suppose a flag like that is worth a lot of money, right?

Did you ask questions before bidding?

    Hi Dave,
You have an interesting flag! I have one like yours about the same size, sewn-in Hinomaru, that is too big for a rifle flag; it may be a garrison flag, with just some light staining. My Nazi banner has small burn holes in it: definitely battle damage. It all depends upon where the flags were displayed.
