WW1 circa 1916 and onwards. Let me see if I can find him for you.
There were 12 Zabel's listed on the verlustlisten for Wki but he is not among them, neither was he on the Volksbund database. So one might be reasonably assured he survived WW1.

The reverse is stamped with Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment 386, 2. Kompanie, rollnumber 432.
