    Fenkner Max Dr. U 73 POW 16.12.43. 08.11.1913

    Hi my friends,

    I have a Question.
Q: He didn't throw-away his erkennungsmarke even though he was taken 'POW'.

This case: German Soldaten are taken POW and So they don't throw-away their erkennungsmarke???

I thought they'd throw-away their erkennungsmarke when they were taken POW.

    What do you think?

Yes, some soldiers did throw their erkennungsmarke away but not every soldier did. Soldiers of the SS were more likely to throw away their emarke then regular army soldiers. I think this was because of the fear of being shot instead of being taking POW. I think that soldiers or sailors etc that did not commit any crimes themselves or did not serve in units who were known for commiting crimes, would have no reason to throw away their emarke and would keep it with them.

    Regards, Rik

Agreed, as proof they are not SS !

Fenkner has his ekm stamped as per the Kriegsmarine regulations of 1936. Interesting to see the variation of the snap line being small holes. As a prisoner there was no reason to either discard or retain the ekm, as the Soldbuch held all the personal and intelligence information that was required by the Allies.
