    Hi Guys
I just bought this ID disc on E-bay.
The seller is from Volgograd -former Stalingrad- and he claims he found it on Pitomnik.
Could this be from Flieger Ausbildungs Regiment 42?
It seems like those guys really went to Stalingrad.

    Hello backsoon,
I write you a pm because there is a small chance that you have found the tag of my grandpa.
He was in 1942 FW by Fl.Ausb.Reg.42 (Salzwedel). In August 42 he ambarrassed the 1/Jagdgeschwader 3 "Udet".
Staffel 1 protect the ground of pitomnik (Platzschutzstaffel).

Brave men indeed...The Stalingrad-Airlift was able to evacuate about 30,000 wounded - experiencing heavy losses decimating the Luftwaffe's Transport Fleet...Growing up in Lampertheim/Germany, I actually knew a survivor who was fortunate enough to be evacuated after losing a leg at the hip (His son rented an apartment from my German Grandmother), but he refused to talk about the war...For me personally, I've always felt that there's something "Sacred" about Stalingrad Relics that sets them apart from relics found elsewhere; My mind is instantly drawn to the suffering & futility of it all...
Thanks for sharing your new score...
    cheers, Glenn

    Hi FJ79
I have written a pm to you.
There is a small chance that this disc actually could be your grandpa's.
Do you have any further information about him?
    Grüss

So is that the half that would of been taken from a dead body for processing by the unit or is that the half that would stay with the body and has been taken from it more recently?

As it only has the one hole I would suggest that this was the part taken by the unit

Indeed. The 3 display frames to the left of my photo below are all relic items I have collected from Stalingrad diggers.

Sometimes these tags break in half after many years in acidic soil. The other half can easily have been found anytime between ww2 and today.
