Article about: I have only just begun to collect Russian WWII. I have this Guard badge that I hope is WWII. Why do some have fringe on the flags? Mine does not. Bob Hritz

Hi Reg, yes, it does indeed say "Guards"

I just love the variants to be found in these badges.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Gentlemen,

This is a GPW era badge that has an enamel configuration unknown to me. Is it original to the badge or a refurbish?

    Regards,

Hi Gus, it looks OK to me. I have seen this pattern of badge before, as the bottom of the banner is quite distinctive.

Most modern enamel is actually plastic based. You can test it by heating a needle and then try and stick it into enamel. If it is modern plastic based it will sink in.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Gentlemen,

Thanks a lot for your replies.

I thought it was wartime because it lacked the fringe, but reading previous posts, I see the fringe was introduced in 1946.

    Regards,

    Gus
