    Hi,
Whilst fishing at a local beach my 9 year old son went mouching and found these rounds.
    https://www.warrelics.eu/forum/attac...1&d=1272479991
The first round is 9mm at the base
The secound is 12mm at the base
The third is also 12mm at the base
And the last is 17mm at the base but nmay be more due to damage. What gets me is the rims.

I have also put a 7.62, .303 and 9mm all found in the same place for scale.
    Cheers

    Hi Geds,
they look like very early lead rounds, perhaps 19th century early 20th, have you checked the history of the beach area to see if there was a firing range near by. The army still use devon and dorset for ranges.

    Hi Dave,
thank you for the quick reply. Yes there is a range about 400m back from the beach , but these rounds are behind the firing point and the firer would have to turn 90 degrees to his left to hit the beach.
As far as I can tell the rounds are lead.

    Hi Geds,

As Dave said try and find out the history of the beach. Former site for a coastal military base?

Back in the 60's i would find ton's of spent shells and lead on the ocean cliffs. Where i live it was not uncommon to see people trying to shoot the seagulls for sport and target practice i'm sure that carried on long ago as well.

I just googled Portland Dorset and it appears to have an extremely long history.

The 2nd I think is a snyder round.

The 3rd round is a .577 Martini Henri round.

    Hi All,
I have been back to the area today and found more 7.62 and .303 rounds. Looking at the history of the area a new small peir was built in this area in the early 90's for a security fence for a naval base. I'am thinking that some sand was taken from the butt's area of the range to bulk this area up and this would explain the various types of ammo found. As this range is now in private hands and unused for anything I phoned the local company but got refused permission to go on the range to see if I could find any more rounds.

If I find any new types on the beach I will post.
    Cheers

The last one looks almost reminscent of a Minie Ball projectile with the 3 grooves at the base end- originally .58 calibre (14.6mm), its impressive impact deformation could surely result in expanding to an apparent 17mm. Is the base of the bullet hollow? The Minie Ball had a somewhat conical hollow in its base...
    Ohhhhh- pillage then burn...

Yes the base is hollow on the round but filled with debris.
I will try to get back to the site next week and see what else turns up.
    Thanks for all your help.
