Yes Pete, I also saw that reply from EOD on the IAA Forum. What I found interesting was that EOD said these were also found in 30x211mm MK303 and 37x250Rmm C/36.
One would expect the 37mm AA guns on U-boats but I was surprised by the 30mm .....but then I know next to nothing about U-boats!

Yup, so not a cartridge at all- it's a cartridge-shaped tool for the gun itself.
