Earlier this afternoon a German 75mm HE head which had been found by a metal detectorist on the beach in Grouville Jersey was safely detonated at the low water mark by the Jersey Bomb Disposal Officer. It is believed that the head was fired from a bunker which once stood on Gorey Harbour. The bunker was demolished years ago to make more room for parking.
A few pieces of shrapnel we picked up after the event with 2 eagle and swastika's to be clearly seen to the base of the head.

Default 75mm gun in its bunker.

Further to the post above, I have been sent the attached photos of the gun suspected of firing the 75mm head that was destroyed on Saturday. The gun, a 7.5 cm Pak 40 (7,5 cm Panzerabwehrkanone 40) was housed in the bunker as seen, but could be removed as and when needed. The post war picture shows the bunker prior to demolition.

Now the dust has settled our BDO man Stuart Elliott has been able to identify the projectile as a 7.5cm lgr. UB Al. (Practice shell with added aluminium flash composition to the explosive charge.
The fuse was a Az.23. n.a - Instantaneous or with 0.15 second delay.
This added info makes it all the more interesting.
