Why are some hollow? I've seen on the internet that there are bullets filled with explosives.

The most common empty bullet you will find will be tracer with the tracer compound that has ignited and burned away....Pete.

It can be.
One floor is still filled. I soaked it in oil. Nothing can happen.

The last bullet (longest) on the last picture is an unfired tracer.
Bottom hermetically sealed with a thin cap of brass/copper. Putting it in oil wont deactivate it, however it cant burn unless you fire it or throw it into a fire.

If it burns it burns for 1.5-2 seconds, green yellow or red flame. It wont ignite unless you try to ignite it.
Not just for MG it was used for various purposes.

The small ones are steel/lead core, it depends on the monufacturer
