Help needed to identify flak fragments?

Article about: Those three horizontal lines are definitely not something you see every day; they're far, far too shallow and narrow to have anything to do with the driving bands. I have an 8,8cm Sprgr. 4,5

I was replying because I believe your expectation of this item being identified is unrealistic. It is called 'managing someone's expectations' and is intended as a polite way of giving someone disappointing news.

I have about 200 chunks of metal like yours and have only EVER identified those pieces with markings on them, and even then only ID'd them as allied or German. The calibre and everything else about them is impossible to determine.

    Malcolm,
Could you take another photo of these fragments with a ruler running there length for scale, and post this new picture up. It might be easier to determine what these fragments are from.
    Regards to all, Simon.

    Malcolm,
Excellent, now we some idea of size to work with.
I still think that it is going to be tricky to work out exactly what these framents are from, but the ruler placed in the photo will be of great help.
    Regards, Simon.

    Hello Simon,

These fragments were (supposedly) kept by a member of the RAF as a souvenir of his time over Germany during WW2 and were found amongst his effects. This may just be a made up story.

The value of these objects to me, if proved to be anything else, is nothing. If it is possible to identify them and support the above 'story' then they would mean everything and have a place in my collection.

I appreciate your efforts to help me.

    Kind regards, Malcolm.

    Malcolm,
The thickness of your pieces is thicker than wall diameter of my Flak 88, so your shrapnel is from something bigger.
As a thought, I have a friend called Tony, Tony is a retired Royal Artillery man. The only relic of WW2, that I am aware, that he has is a piece of shrapnel from a German bomb that he found near his house. I suggest that your RAF man, kept these pieces of shrapnel for a similar reason, which would support your story.
    Regards, Simon.

    Hello Simon,

Thank you for the reply and comparison with your 88mm round.

My only thought. If the three ridges cast into the metal are rotation bands would this suggest a shell and not a bomb? They seem to run in parallel not forming part of a thread.

    Kind regards, Malcolm.

    Malcolm,
If shell, its bigger than an 88mm. But, for comparisson, the bands on yours are thinner than an 88. The thickness of the wall of your shell is thicker than my 88 though.
    Regards to all, Simon.
