    Attached is a photo of a dated belt, WITH THE HOLES !! I stand corrected. The holes are almost certainly to allow for easier insertion of the cartridges. The 'solid' links will not have 'given' much when inserting cartridges so this is possibly the solution they came up with.

    The cartridges are a tight fit even with the holes so imagine without spring it would make for sore fingers.
