I have a rather large German Ordnance dictionary. If we can get some more details about this I will look it up. For now, I can only guess it is the inner tube for a Blendkörper 24. There is a UK based collector group on line specializing in such things. NH
I imagine the smoke grenades would have been boxed up and accessed when needed. Probably not something you would carry around in your pocket! NH
I would hope not. A little research shows the titanium tetrachloride that the tube was originally encased with would release hydrogen chloride when this thing broke and it came in contact with air. That stuff would be potentially dangerous if you breathe it in, and for sure a good way to disorient your enemy as they hack and cough their way to safety.
It looks more like the smoke grenade. The black rubber washer is still on the top, and you can see what looks like the white residue of the plaster of paris and some of the fused sulfur that was above that. Check out the schematic I posted, and it seems to all be there...
