Looks like it is (was) missing the base plug. Anyhow its a Mills, a 5 or a 36. Maybe it was a bring back, and de-mined. No way of telling now, but cant be to carefull with EOX's.

Still pretty scary to hear this as these unexploded grenades and bombs seem to pop up like spiders at the wrong time. Glad everything worked out well and all is safe.

Probably someone who placed it in the tree on purpose. Because since the plug was missing they have used a bolt with the same size Maybe to attach a string for drying clothes?

Do you have another tree near this one? Maybe you will find another there..

Well, in the Ostfront such things happen almost every day:-). Do not touch the things You do not know, it is the best advice. But there is also no need to be too afraid of - in 98,99% of cases WWI or WWII ammo is not dangerous if you do not try to move it.

Please be careful if your doing anymore work in your garden mate, I'd maybe go round with a metal detector first.

Nah....Just get a decent lawn mower/garden roller to take the strain out of it. It makes a good weed whacker too.
