    I was at an auction today and this came up. It went for 50 dollars so I had to buy it. I have ben researching it for over 3 hours and have not ben able to identify it. I was hoping someone would recognise it. It weighs 73 lbs and measures 20" by 6". Thank you for taking the time to hepl me out.

    I just double checked it is exactly 20" long but is 5 3/4" wide

    You'll also need the correct fuse for it too.........

    I need to find out what it is first. how hard do you think it will be to find a fuse

    About the closest thing I can think of without the exact measurements of the shellhead with the fuse, etc. is for a WWI French Model 16 145mm gun. The weight of the round sounds about right when you factor in the brass,powder, etc. Some of these were left over from WWI and were used in WWII-mainly by the Germans.

    It does look like one type of German 15cm shell (the Jgr. 38), but it's short; my listing says the complete shell, with fuze, is 25.75", and it's unlikely the fuze is really 5.75" long. Plus the base diameter is listed as 5.905", which is too large. Plus they appear to have only a single driving band, usually of sintered iron; this shell has a thin copper band below the primary one.
    Ohhhhh- pillage then burn...
