That is probably for the best , as I was writing my response . I was hoping you wouldn't fool with it too much , there are many stories out there about old munitions long thought to be inert that weren't ! I'd hate for anything harmful to befall any member here , I'm glad you took the cautious approach and got rid of the shell . Welcome to the forum and sorry about raining on your parade about your new find .

Nope , it gets blown up usually . But that does tell them if it was live or not , small explosive charge placed against the shell and detonated , if it's simply the small explosion it was inert , however if there is a large explosion it was live all along . European farmers are still being hurt by WWI shells over 100 years later . Better safe then sorry .
