Need help pricing a shell from 1891 Part.Fabr.Karlsruhe

I have had this shell from my father, it's been with us for ages. On the bottom it reads Part.Fabr. Karslruhe and in the middle left DEZ and right 1891. I think there are not many of these shells around anymore. I hope somebody can tell me about this shell. I'm new to this forum, know nothing about war relics at all. But am curious about this old grenade. I guess they shot most of them, maybe I have the last one? Just kiddin' would appreciate any help.

The only thing I can say it is pre WWI Germany produced shell. Seems that it was fired but did not exploded in some reason. Why prices of such items are not too high? Who knows, for example prices of trench art are also low. One reason may be that it is hard to sell deko shells and ship them to other collectors. Anyway, it is a very nice relic and maybe also pretty rare.

Hi in the UK you can pick these up for about £40 to £60 ,yours falls into the lower end as it has been fired

It is a 37mm round for the large Maxim "Pom Pom" used by many nations around the turn of the century, especially in South Africa. Also used in the Hotchkiss revolving cannon.

Although a nice headstamp, unfortunately it is probably the commonest artillery round found today and so not worth a great deal. I would think £40 in the UK is ambitious, but don't know the values in South Africa.

Nice! I saw a completely resored Hotchkiss revolving cannon beeing fired yesterday on National Geograpic Channel. Devastating! I have tried to find these rounds but find simulair rounds with different timestamps. Most from 1st WW. But from 1891 I have only seen mine so far. That PomPom came back in the Boerenoorlog in South Africa as a weapon that was used there often. Found some historic reviews about that war and the weapons used. Thank you TonyE for this info.

I have been going over shells, Pompom ammo, Hotchkiss Ammo, googled 37 mm ammo, and for two days now. Did not know there were so many ways to kill as effective as possible invented. But that's another story. I could not fina a pic of my shell anywhere. Especially the carved edge around the grenade from 1891 I could not find anywhere. I found many that looked like the one I have but nowhere I found the one I have. Oke. it's not unique, I believe that. But why does it look like nobody has one like I have? Again, for all you specialists here, You know better. I am an amateur and have this thing. And am getting more and more curious about it. Because I can not find a picture of it anywhere. (Well mine of course...)

I have searched Google in every corner I could find for some days now. I do find rounds that look like mine. But can not find mine! Specially the yeard DEZ 1891, I se no where. No pics or descriptions anywhere. Am I just a bad Google user? Especially the carved copper edge from the round looks special to me, I could in this particulair comination not find it in any collection I could find. Many rounds that look like it, true. BUt untill now, none that is the same as mine. Are there really so many rounds from 1891 left? I'm an amateur, I know. You guys know better, you are the specialists. My question? Is that round so common?
