Exactly. Me, I use regular paint thinner- no residue like with WD40 or oils, no health hazards of the level of products that can remove 'anything', or even acetone and usually no extra cost since most folks have some around someplace...

Zippo lighter fluid works great and no residue non acidic too.

Well, for fast and efficient removal, without any residue being left behind or any damage to the item, I use a product called 'Zoff' which, being a pharmacist, is readily available as it is marketed as an adhesive plaster remover

Be careful with acetone as it will melt any plastic item it comes into contact with.
