I got these shells for free with a bundel of german militaria i buyed, are these original? can somebody tell me when and how they were used?

Usually fired from either of these flare pistols, could be used as a distress flare to signal for help or to signal the start of an attack etc!...
If these are still live i wouldn't keep them in your house!...
