I think that maybe a commercially produced hunting round, Harry is right when he says a dum dum type round, it's designed to expand on impact when hunting big game!...

Cheers bud, I thought of that but it's not in any of my books, and with no date on the bottom? It's got me stumped, originally I thought it may have been an early grenade launcher round where the head expands once fired, but I've dismissed that....🤔

Hi John, well you wanted possible explanations, the Japanese navy used a model 92 MG which used 7.7x56r mm ammo, which was interchangeable with .303 British ammo,it was loaded at Yokosuka navy arsenal and the headstamp would have included the backwards letter E. They had high explosive loadings which had a flat pointed bullet,so MAYBE that is what you have.....Pete.

Pete..Many thanks, you really do learn something new everyday! I couldn't find it ANYWHERE, thanks so much again, a wealth of knowledge

What you have is a Commercially produced hunting round, the bullet was produced as you have it there and the Headstamp is actually E B for Eley Brothers. I have a catalouge somewhere with all the different hunting bullets available at the time, I will dig it out and scan it for you. I specialise in collecting .303 rounds mainly military but I have a lot of early hunting rounds as well.
