The 1911 probably is a date, and I am fairly sure this is a WWI shell case. I don't know enough about these to give a definite answer. The 75mm Field Gun was the primary French field artillery piece during WWI. It was also used by the US and to some extent by the UK.

I am going by the "75 DE C", which, as far as i know, is a French 75mm marking.

Not too sure about the identification of the case, I'll leave that to the people that know what they're talking about... However the part that interests me is the engraving that on this one looks to be very faint. I don't know if its just me but I think the Royal Artillery Cap Badge is engraved towards the top of it. Any other ideas?

    Thanks

Hi Gaz, and welcome to the forum!

It is indeed a French 75.

    75 DEC = 75 mm De Campagne.

Danny, I would agree, an RA cap badge. Well spotted.

    Cheers, Ade.

hi thanks very much for the help. it's brilliant to know the history of this.
to think that some guy painstakenly hammered the pattern out nearly 100 years ago.
anyway for the people interested in the engraving ive unloaded some more pics. I really dont have a clue about these thing. i picked it up at a charity shop.
