Verdun 37mm tank shell?

Came across the in an antique store, I believe it’s a 37mm tank shell from what I have researched. It measures 6 5/8” tall and diameter is approx. 1 3/8”.

It’s engraved with VERDUN with a shield and the number 57, the other side says RENNES alongside of an anchor with the world pictured in the center. The bottom is stamped 37-85 PDPs 154 and 1.17. Sorry for the pictures, the best I could do.

Should I clean this up and polish it or leave as is?

Personally, id leave it as it as it has a nice patina and cleaning may well rub of the inscription. Try not to put your fingerprints on the brass as it may tarnish it.

I have a piece of Boer War trench art on a shell, that once upon a time would have been a gorgeous item with lovely detailing, but because someone has over polished you can only see the inscriptions if you look really hard.

Very nice do not clean it.
I remember finding a case of those in the river in Fer-en-tardenois France.

The 57 th inf Rgt was at Verdun between the 5 th of mai and the 21 of the month .
Every French Regiment MUST go to Verdun.
