    Default 1831 short sword??

so, i returned to the gentleman who had previously rummaged through his garage and given me two ww1 bayos, only this time he handed me a sword of roman design, brass ridged handle with a double edged blade with a single fuller running central down the blade, on closer inspection it has two dates of 1831 and 1838 with a french inscription...... i have discovered it is identicle to the french 1831 short sword apart from my sword has 1 fuller and the ones i have found pics of either have no fuller or have two.... any thoughts of what i have??

Without pictures it sounds like you have a French sword bayonet for the M1866 "Chassepot" rifle.

This is not a Mle 66 bayonet which had a curved blade - not at all Roman looking.

Short swords of the type you describe were used by a lot of different countries in the nineteenth century.

Maybe able to help if you could post some photos.

Does it have any markings ?

    Regards

Thanks for the replys guys, here are the pics, it is inscribed under the handle bothe sides in french with dates of 1831 and 1838, it has a brass handle and leather and brass scabbard, after a little research i believe it is the model 1831 frensh short sword based on the roman gladius sword, only difference is mine has 1 blood gutter running down the blade and the ones i have seen have none or two, your thoughts gentlemen.....
