Could well be French - known as a Sabre Briquet.

Also used by lots of other European countries between 1800 and 1850.

Sorry I can't be any more specific than that.

    Regards

    Richie

    Nice.
That type can be crossed on the wall and make a very nice display.

hi rich , known as the "briquet" and was the typical infantry sabre of the napoleonic wars . shorter versions were also used by artillery troops as a sidearm until the advent of the sword bayonet . used by many armys from 1800/1850. the" swiss army knife" of the french empire soilder , although really useless against cavalry sabers, soilders retained them as often used for chopping wood and cutting food. even used by the french imperial guard . the name saber" briquet " was given by the cavalry regiments to mock the shorter swords of the infantry regiments as the curved form of the guard reminded them of the tinderboxes used by the infantry to light fires......cheers paul

Thanks for the info and help! I figured they have to be worth the $80 I paid for them.

A good deal, especialy with the original scabbard's.
They are worth over the double you payed for them.
In Belgium they have been used far longer by armed forces and police.

Rich A. I traded a new Budweiser sign not worth much at all and he gave me the sword. I posted mine 2-4-10 on this forum under( what was this sword used for). If someone could post the link I would be very thankful. Great swords Gary
