Japanese Nagoya Toyoda Bayonet w/ wooden sheath. Flea Market find.

Picked this up about a year ago and forgot I had it until I was cleaning out the closet. I have never seen one with a wooden sheath before. It is no where near in perfect shape but it was well used and abused. Any insight on what I have here?

These are known as 'Last Ditch' bayonets, as several manufacturing details
were omitted. Wooden scabbards were also substituted for conservation,
as they were normally made of metal. Your bayonet seems to have
had prolonged exposure to weather or a damp environment.


Below is an unissued 'National Denki' model I bought
at auction 5 or 6 years ago........

Yes this bayonet was improperly stored. I paid $35 for it at the time taking a chance on it and felt that it was worth that as a piece of history. Don't know what its worth, probably less, but I like to believe that it had a hard, battlefield life.

I think you did ok !

$35 isn't so bad for one in this condition. You might give the blade and metal surfaces
a rub with light oil to remove surface rust and to keep it from getting any worse,
if you don't like the way it looks, but it's up to you.

Later types are somewhat more desireable apparently, and I've seen asking prices
of $250 + for 'minty' examples. Whether they sell at that price, I don't know.
I usually see earlier 'Type 30' bayonets for $70 to $125. Leather frogs for
Japanese bayonets can get quite expensive too........
