"These numbers are commonly referred to as rack numbers. These numbers do two things. They make sure the soldier and the bayonet stay together, and if the rifle is stored in a rack, the soldier will be able to find his rifle by locating the corresponding rack number that's on the bayonet. Also, you will notice that the same number is on the scabbard as on the bayonet. This assures that the correct bayonet and scabbard stay together. On your M9, it might be that the number was changed from 098 to 099. It also appears that the soldier inscribed his name on the cross guard as well. Rack numbers are very common and can be used in different ways, but the forgoing are some common ways they are used. Also, these numbers show the collector that this bayonet has been issued and used by a US soldier or marine."

    BTW, this bayonet is an:

Phrobis III, three-line, multi purpose US M9 bayonet, 2nd generation, (1986-87), with a "lazy 9", "flat top M"

    Greetings Reibert,

No, the Fire Starting Tool, Magnesium was an item available to company supply stores and would have been available for issue to whomever the company commander’s supply sergeant deemed acceptable to issue it to. That said, it does fit nicely in the M9s scabbard’s pouch. What was the pouch on the scabbard for? See post #3 on this thread M9 bayonet scabbard pouch - EDGED WEAPONS - U.S. Militaria Forum

Hope this helps, us 48 year olds have to stick together

    Regards,

    Thx, Bud !

Tried to store an CZ M75 mag, also, a Glock 17 mag, both, "No Way !"

The pouch of the Phrobis M9 sheath is too small !

IMO the pouch wasn´t designed, to carry a pistol mag !

Do you own an Beretta F92 pistol and an Phrobis M9 bayonet, please show me an image, how you store the pistol mag in the pouch of the Phrobis M9 scabbard !

    Greetings Reibert,

Sold off my one M9 Bayonet awhile back and no longer have access to M9 Pistol mags (now retired). I can only go by what was printed in the M9 Bayo’s Manual as originally linked and highlighted below. If a primary source doesn't cut it, then I'm out of options.

    Regards,

    Lance
