French helmets were never fitted with liners until early 1940. Prior to that a medium sized wheel of Camembert or Brie was placed inside the shell to offer padding and a calorie rich meal as and if necessary.

That makes sense. That's why I never see liners from ww2 Adrians because the French mostly lost the war then!
