Yes it could be the remains of cross strap broken off. Some of them including the one on mine is a reddish colour. Maybe Mikel could confirm whether it's leather or not. It also seems to be riveted in place rather than bolted in place.

Look closer at the second photo. I don't believe that is a remnent of a chin strap. It appears that it might be attached to the center of the shell. Also notice the "shadow" of another similar piece perpendicular to this piece. Could this be part of a liner? Of course I could be waty off in my observation and that strap could just have been placed in that position for the photo!

Mikel, is that leather strap attached to the shell?

The BS logo (W Beardmore & Co) on the helmet is certainly a WWI period marking. The strap is surely the remains of a WW2 period liner, the one end looks to be cut too straight to be a ripped leather strap, so this would confirm that it is a Mk I* helmet.

I still can't tell if it has a bolt or rivet attaching the liner though.

Whatever Mark it may be though, I still think it's RAF, although I have no clue as to what the '1' might signify.
