After I got my first WD M20 motorcycle,I started accumulating all the uniforms and gear of the DR. Here are a couple of my helmets (illustrating the early/late color difference), along with goggles and other DR-related things. A full section on the WW2 DR and the uniforms and webgear they wore can be found over at Henk Joore's BSA WD M20 website:

I thought I would have a go as mentioned earlier in this thread of stripping my 1945 dated despatch riders helmet of metallic paint put on by my dad when i bought the helmet as a young kid.Big mistake at the time i Know.So bought some Nitromors applied it and stripped off the paint but it has took all the paint off,as can be seen in the picture. Now what advise can anyone give ie.leave it as it is or give it another lick of paint and if so what would the correct colour or shade be.Any help would be more than welcome.

First of all, did you use water with the nitromores, and do smalls areas at a time,i know its shutting the gate after the horse has bolted but there have been many threads on here about using this product, secondly as to repainting, you may be able to obtain some MOD green from specialist suppliers, or from a local army depot, even an arms fair might have some original paint, personally i would repaint

Thanks for the reply.I didn't even think of checking old threads on the subject, more fool me and just applied it neat to the whole helmet and in seconds the paint was coming off.For some stupid reason i thought it would just lift the metallic paint..I think a repaint is the way to go. either way it will better than it was covered in 1972 Vauxhall Viva paint

yes you do apply it neat but use water to counteract the acid when you first see the first paint layer lifting and by doing small areas you can guage how corrosive the acid is reacting with the paint and if need be stop and adopt another method, still its a learning process when restoring and you will wiser the next time, cheers dave

Hi, I think we probably have all had a go at stripping paint off lids, 9 x out of 10 it looks worse.
As your helmet is dated 45, the colour will be the darker khaki, look inside the helmet to try & match what it should be.

    Hi,
I think these early despatch rides helmets are great.
There's at least 2 or 3 different types, so would like to get hold of one of them soon. I was'nt sure they made them so late in the war, thought it was only to about 41 or 42, when the steel helmets came out. thanks for showing this quite rare helmet.

I have read somewhere that they were in service in the Army until July 1943 but still carried on in service with the home guard and A.T.S long after that.
