    Hi Jerry,
to look at the pictures it looks nice, however if we consider it was repainted in the postwar period there would be nothing strange that on that occasion the liner was replaced, it would still be a nice helmet.
For my modest experience, however I confirm what you say, I have often seen late production liners on which only the first three digits of the year appear, a recurring case are those of the CCL manufacturer, for example this I photographed on a Mk3 in my collection:

My mkiii is the other helmet that has s very vague 4th digit, though I can't remember the maker off the top of my head.

I have no doubts on it or the rac that both are original to the helmets.
    Regards,

    Jerry

Well, then everything seems to match! As I said in my post, the liner of my example is CCL 1943, but to control this I had to disassemble it and read the mark applied to the back of the liner structure.

One thing I noticed, you don't see many of these for sale. There is one on ebay for £300......

It is true, while the post-war RAC Mk2 is easy enough to find, Mk1 WW2 examples have become fairly rare and expensive, in my area I see very few!

It is interesting to note that most likely a substantial amount of CCL liners produced in 1943 had this feature.
